Common scam and safety red flags
- They ask for money, gift cards, crypto, a deposit, or reimbursement before the work is clearly agreed and started.
- They pressure you to move immediately to text, email, or another app, especially before the basic scope is documented.
- They ask for passwords, verification codes, bank details, Social Security numbers, or a photo of your ID.
- The task description changes into something unsafe, illegal, sexual, discriminatory, or materially different from the original post.
- They push for a secluded meeting, bring unexpected people, or use threats, urgency, or intimidation.
A safer way to hire or accept work
- Write down the exact scope, location, expected timing, and agreed pay before work starts.
- For a first meeting, prefer daylight and a visible, public or well-populated setting when practical.
- Tell someone where you will be, especially for an in-person task at a private residence.
- Keep payment discussions clear. Never share account passwords or one-time verification codes.
- Document progress with messages, notes, and before/after photos when appropriate.
For employers
- Describe the work honestly, including physical requirements, tools, access, pets, hazards, and time expectations.
- Do not ask workers to perform licensed, dangerous, or regulated work unless the proper qualifications and conditions are in place.
- Do not ask a worker to start additional work without agreeing on the change first.
- Inspect and approve work only after you have had a fair opportunity to review it.
For workers
- Ask questions when a task is vague. You should understand the job before you travel or begin.
- Bring only the tools and equipment you can use safely and lawfully.
- Do not claim a license, insurance, certification, or capability you do not have.
- Stop work if conditions become unsafe. Notify the employer through the task message thread.
